Female photographer specializing in portraits.
With a Mamiya RZ in one hand and a flash in the other, a leather jacket on my back, I roam and explore the world.
My photo shoots are always very quick because I love spontaneity and letting go.
Successfully bringing the models into my world in just a few minutes is a personal challenge.
Even if I hide behind my camera, each portrait is a self-portrait without reflections.
I travel through my models. I am at once a violinist, an old rocker, a young actress…
I project myself into my model like an alter ego.
I work as a portrait photographer for various media outlets: Libération, Le Monde, France Télévisions, Les Echos week-end, Greenpeace, and more, and I am a member of the Divergence-Images collective.
Doctor of Fine Arts and Art Sciences, I also teach the History of Contemporary Photography and continue my exploration of various pictorial and photographic mediums.
My iconographic universe is a constant reflection on the human body and skin.
Passionate about music, my first book, “Faces of Sound,” was published in 2019 by Médiapop Editions. It is a collection of photographic portraits of around fifty musicians from the independent scene over the past thirty years (Sonic Youth, Pavement, Suede, The Bad Seeds, Etienne Daho, etc.).
I exhibit regularly: Paris (Carreau du Temple, Hôtel de Ville de Paris, Galerie Visionairs, Maison de la Tunisie, Walrus Bar, etc.), Arles (Nuit de l’année des Rencontres d’Arles), Cambodia (Photophnompenh Festival), China (Sichuan Art Institute), etc.

Sandrine Boyer Engel did not grow up with a camera always at hand. Nothing predestined her for the realm of images. Born in Detroit, USA and raised in France, she followed a well-defined path: law school, a world of rigour and precision. But her gaze was drawn elsewhere—to the unnoticed details, the silences, and the subtleties that tell another story.
She discovered photography late, almost by chance, during a trip to Egypt. Her language would be the image.
Since then, her eye has taken her from Paris to Lisbon, from Seville to Washington, from Dubai to unseen horizons, where photography reveals what words can only suggest.
Recognised in the world of high-end events, she captures the essence of meticulously orchestrated moments, from refined weddings with studied aesthetics to portraits that reveal a powerful identity.
This artistic vision was recognised in 2010 with a Special Prize at the Planches Contact Photography Festival in Deauville, France— a confirmation of what she already knew: a successful photograph reveals what must not fade.
